Moose (elk)

The Moose (elk) is the largest deer animal in the world and can reach a height
of over 2 metres. It can weigh up to 800 kg. Moose are found all over
Sweden, but not on the island of Gotland.
There are approx. 300,000 elks in Sweden, of which approx. 100,000 are
shot during the annual hunting season. Moose are a major industry in
Sweden. They can live up to 25 years.
When in heat, an moose bull can call upon 4 to 5 elk cows. The heat period
occurs between September and October and last only for 10 to 12 hours.
The cow is pregnant for 8 months and usually gives birth to 2 calves
who, only after a couple of hours, are capable of following the cow on
their long wobbly legs.
During the first week after calving, the cow keeps the calves well
hidden. The moose bulls lose their horns in late winter, but they grow back
however within 7 months.
If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of an elk at the edge of a
forest or close to the road.
Good Luck!

,but, with patience, you
can be one of the lucky ones to see an moose. Don't forget to bring your
camera.

Moose on the road
12 to 15 traffic
accidents involving mooses occur everyday in Sweden, resulting in major
injuries. The accidents occur mostly at dawn or at sunset.
As elks can run at speeds of up to 50 km an hour, they can appear on the
road in front of your car at the blink of an eye.
Reduce speed ! Mooses do not know the rules of the road!
